Cast a wide net: nearly every country designates some protected area, so work region by region and don't stop at the famous ones. Any officially designated national park counts, including marine, desert, cave and urban ones; private reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and biosphere reserves without that title do not.

How to approach it

Treat this as a breadth test rather than a knowledge test. Set a clock and brainstorm by geography: pick continents one at a time, then work down through regions and countries, asking for each what its protected areas are called. Switch the axis whenever you stall, from landforms to habitats to administrative units to the naming conventions used locally. Write down fragments and partial names even when you cannot finish them, because a rough guess costs nothing and a blank line earns nothing. Keep a running list so you do not circle back over the same ground, and deliberately spend the last third of your time in the least famous places you can recall. Quantity of distinct, plausible entries is what the scoring rewards.

Get a hint

Start with the scale of the thing: the world holds thousands of these designations across more than a hundred countries, so almost any region you can picture has at least one.

A little more

Move away from the postcard picks. Think of coastal and marine units, mountain ranges, wetlands, deserts, volcanic slopes, cave systems and tiny islands that carry the same official label.

One step further

Go granular: the list rewards individual units of only a few square kilometres, places named after creeks, ridges, seasonal rivers or local words that almost nobody could pronounce.

Why these answers count

The distribution is unusually flat at the top: of 3,630 recorded answers, 3,603 reached at least 60 points, and 3,338 of those landed on exactly 85. Almost any correctly named park therefore paid well, which tells you the scorer rewarded breadth of recognition rather than obscurity alone. The single 100-point entry, Keibul Lamjao, sits alone at the peak because it is a genuinely hard, rarely offered name that most players would never reach. The 264 answers at 60 — Abaco National Park, Absheron National Park, Agulhas National Park and hundreds like them — are the floor for correct-but-common picks. Only 27 entries scored below 60, presumably hedged, partial or non-qualifying attempts. The lesson: correctness almost guaranteed a decent score, and the real premium came from reaching one deeply obscure unit rather than from a long list of well-known ones.
